Maintaining a good quality air in your house is certainly not easy. A strong incentive to do something about it, is when you recall the memory of that award situation of a foul scent welcoming your guests at the door step. Your home makes a statement about you, cluttered and stinky home would be interpreted as as sign of problems and usually there are.

What your friends and relatives think about you may not look of utmost importance but actually their opinions is the lacmus by which you measure if you are worthy person. You may be such a person but if there is no one to tell you this, you would not feel like one. Essentially you measure your success by listening to what people think about you. Now lets stop philosophizing and talk a bit on how to reinstall the fresh smell of your home.

Here I would list some general advice on how to tackle with foul odor in your house:

Thorough Cleaning

1. Open The Windows
Even if it is winter, opening the windows will freshen the air in your home. This is simple and you can do this on a regular basis. Opening the windows before you go to bed for 5 minutes will oxigenate the room ensuring a better sleep, colder air temperature would also contribute for a good sleep. This is very easy and the difference is noticeable but won’t last very long if there are sources of bad odor that need to be removed.

2. Curtains

Remove the curtains from the rods, collect all rings and clips in a little box so you don’t loose any. If you can sense a bad odor coming from them, wash them adding 200-250ml white vinegar to the hot water. Vinegar will chemically react and negate the smell. For a serious scent you may have to repeat this treatment several times. The most common reason for stinky curtains is smoking, heavier types of curtain fabrics would radiate this “aroma” intensely after just a night of drink & smoke with your friends. Also pillows and covers might need a wash after

3. Rugs and Carpets

A good idea would be to vacuum your rugs and carpets at least twice a week. Dust and soil is accumulating on your carpets and rugs 24/7. Once the deeper layers are stuffed with these particles, your furnishings will start to radiate bad smell instead of filtering the air. Vacuuming may reduce the accumulation of dirt in these deep layers but won’t be enough. Professional cleaners in London recommend that you order a deep carpet cleaning treatment once a year. Appart from improving the air quality, regular carpet cleaning treaments are needed in order to preserve your carpet in good condition for many years to come. You can ask the cleaners to use carpet freshener or you can buy one in the nearest department store.

If you have a pet and despite of your best efforts it still goes on the carpet, you might need to use pet enzyme neutralizer. Search for a specific pet neutralizer because the “all purpose” types are less effective. You can find those in pet supply stores and they are realtively cheap. Unlike deodorizers which only mask the smell, enzyme neutralizers dissolve the smell and the best part about it is that your pet would not smell it’s own scent and would stop going there.
