7 New Purposes for the Lonely Old Socks https://www.londonlocalservices.co.uk/7-new-purposes-for-the-lonely-old-socks/ https://www.londonlocalservices.co.uk/7-new-purposes-for-the-lonely-old-socks/#comments Wed, 06 Mar 2013 12:40:25 +0000 https://www.londonlocalservices.co.uk/?p=2515 Continue reading ]]> I’m sure that every housewife has lost at least one sock in the washing machine. And no matter how much I want to help you find it, I can’t. Scientists still don’t know how socks magically disappear and where they go. However, if you want to give the lonely sock a second chance, here are several creative ideas, which will bring it back to use.sock-toys

Rag or Duster

Kids often make messes and if you wonder with what to clean them, the old sock can serve as a rag or a duster. In this way you will save money from buying microfibre cloths.

Sock Toy

Surprise your child with a cute sock toy. You will need a needle, thread, yarn and several buttons or beads. Put your imagination to work and create a unique toy. If you lack inspiration, check out these great DIY tutorials.

Feet Warmer

I know that usually this is the main purpose of socks, but here I have something else in mind. Fill the sock with rice, tie it well and put it in the microwave for 2-3 minutes. After that your feet can enjoy the warmth for a long time.

Hair Band

Socks are usually very elastic, so if you cut one in circles you’ll have lots of hair bands to use at home. Or you can cut the tip of the sock, roll it and then use it for making the perfect hair bun.

Skin Softener

If the skin of your feet or hands is too rough, you can soften it very easily. Before you go to bed, rub them thoroughly with cream and after that put two old cotton socks on them. You will be amazed by the great result in the morning.

Air Freshener

Another great idea for reusing old and lonely socks is to turn them into air fresheners. Fill a sock with sprigs of dried lavender and put it in the wardrobe against moths. If you want to refresh your living room, fill the sock with cinnamon sticks and dried flowers.

Creative Insulation

A perfect way to reuse an old sock is to make a huge stuffed snake from it. This snake can be put in front of doors or windows to prevent the cold air from getting inside your home. Such a fun and creative way to insulate a room, don’t you think? If you want to make this sock snake, follow the tutorial here.

In the cold days of January one of your best friends is the hot cup of tea. If you want to keep the heath for longer, you can make a cute cup warmer from the sleeve of an old sweater.

Pillowcasepillowcase-1

The rest of the sweater can be used for making decorative pillowcases. If you have enough time and yarn, you can even create a cover for a whole sofa.

Another brilliant DIY idea is to make cup coasters – just cut out circles, squares or any other shapes from the old sweater and then sew the edges with a thread, so they won’t loosen with time.

How to Reuse Old Newspapers https://www.londonlocalservices.co.uk/how-to-reuse-old-newspapers/ https://www.londonlocalservices.co.uk/how-to-reuse-old-newspapers/#comments Mon, 03 Dec 2012 13:27:29 +0000 https://www.londonlocalservices.co.uk/?p=1755 Continue reading ]]> newspaper-vaseSomehow my home is always cluttered with old newspapers, although I’m not subscribed to even one issue. I used to throw away or recycle them, but then I began to wonder if there is some other way that I can reuse them. And then I found the new home décor trend, called upcycle. So instead of getting rid of the newspapers and throwing them to waste, now I transform and find a new function for them. Wonder how I do it? Find out in the list of ways to reuse old newspapers below:

  1. Light a fire. If you have a fireplace, you can easily light it up by using rolled newspapers.
  2. Clean glass surfaces or windows. Crumple a few sheets of newsprint, dip them into a mixture of water and vinegar and you can start the green window cleaning.
  3. Wrap gifts. Instead of buying expensive decorating paper, you can choose an interesting page, which will be much more fun than the usual gift wrap.newspaper-gift
  4. Make gift bags. Choose a newspaper page with a colourful accent and create a bag from it. Your gifts will definitely make their receiver smile.newspaper-bags
  5. Use for wallpapers. Bring a modern touch in your home décor, by papering one of the walls in a room with old newspaper pages.newspaper-wallpaper
  6. Pack fragile items. If you want to transport glasses, plates or other fragile items, wrap them up in newspapers to ensure their safety.
  7. Ripen fruits. If you have bought fruits or vegetables that are still green and not ready for consumption, you can wrap them in newspaper so they can ripen faster.
  8. Papier mache. The old newsprints are perfect for all kind of fun projects and home decoration, like this bowl for example.paper-mache-bowl
  9. Origami. This type of art is not so difficult as you think – just watch several videos online and start practising.newspaper-flowers
  10. Decorate. You can make different ornaments for decorating your home, you just need to have some inspiration.newspaper-decoration
  11. Make toys. The more creative parents can go beyond decorating and even make a toy for their children from reused newspapers.newspaper-toys
  12. Create furniture. Sounds unbelievable, but I actually came upon this picture of a stool made from old newspapers.newspaper-stool
  13. Decoupage. Use this technique in combination with newspapers and in no time you can change the look and style of an old piece of furniture.newspaper-decoupage
  14. Filling. Fill in the shoes or bags, that you aren’t currently using, with newsprint in order to keep their shape.
  15. Make jewellery beads. By rolling old magazines or newspapers you can create unique pieces of jewellery.newspaper-jewellery

Hope that I have inspired you for reusing and upcycling your old newspapers. However, be careful, because you can become addicted and start reusing even some of your favourite books or important documents, such as the inventory report.
Just kidding of course. Enjoy!
